Dorp Dead was this weird experimental novel. We didn’t see a rush of other novels like that, but as you’re suggesting, it did bring into the genre of children’s books a new possibility that could be picked up on decades later, consciously or unconsciously. Julia Woolfolk Cunningham (October 4, – Febru ) was an American author of children's literature.. She is best remembered for her novel Dorp Dead which won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, and for The Treasure Is The Rose which was a finalist for the National Book Award.. She was sister to John W. Cunningham, a Western author who created the story of the influential film High Noon. At this was the very last book I read from the "children's" library. Scary and compelling story. Fantastic illistrations, and not too childish for a someone soon to move on to adult fiction (or I guess now-a-days its called Young Adult Fiction). Dorp Dead is about a boy who is not perfect/5.

It's all so freighted with layers of significance that, like Lois Lowry's Gathering Blue (), Anne Mazer's Oxboy (), or, further back, Julia Cunningham's Dorp Dead (), it becomes more an exercise in analysis than a living, breathing story. Still, the tiger, "burning bright" with magnificent, feral presence, does make an arresting. Get this from a library! Dorp [sic] dead. [Julia Cunningham; James J Spanfeller] -- When a lonely boy leaves an orphanage to be apprenticed to a laddermaker only to find out that he is a virtual prisoner, he seeks escape with the one affectionate creature in his life, the dog Mash.

Dorp Dead is the moving story of a young orphan who is sent to live with a mentally-ill man. A little book but packed with emotion. (I read this novel in the 70s when I was taking an adolescent lit. class. The critique came from one I did for the class.)/5.

Dorp Dead was well known and considered controversial when it was published in the mid 60's. This beautifully written, slim volume is set in a mysterious, surreal world and like many children's stories features a young orphan as the protagonist/5(13).

Dorp Dead remains just as interesting, just as mysterious, just as chilling as it was when it was first released. And it has inspired me to seek out other Cunningham novels, including her National Book Award finalist The Treasure Is the Rose.
